Annie Louise Caldwell Mitchell was born on February 6, 1931 to the late Iven B. Caldwell and Wilma Carr Caldwell in Kosciusko, Mississippi, where she was raised.  She was united in holy matrimony to William Smith, Sr., in 1946.  In January, 1948, William Lee Smith, Jr., was born. She then moved to New Orleans, Louisiana with her father at the age of 19.

In 1951, she met and married Joseph Butler Mitchell, Jr., and they purchased property and moved to Slidell, Louisiana.  To this union, eleven beautiful children were born, James Albert Mitchell, Dennis B. Mitchell, Delores Ann Mitchell, Joseph Mitchell III, Iven B. Mitchell (deceased), Pamela Jean Mitchell, Aaron Caldwell Mitchell, Mary Louise Mitchell, Sandra Diana Mitchell, Gustave "Gus" Wright Mitchell (deceased), and Dwayne Fitzgerald Mitchell.

Annie was preceded in death by her parents, two children, one sister, Catherine Hannah of Westpoint, Mississippi; R. B. Caldwell of Orlando, Florida; Jimmy Caldwell of Kosciusko, Mississippi; one grandson, Donell "Julio" Ramon Mitchell, Sr., and ex-husband, Joseph Butler Mitchell, Jr.
